Covid Caution Area
Given the degrees of public comfort with current public policy related to masking and physical distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and its variants, the UP&DT Festival has created a CAUTION AREA that allows festival go-ers to physically distance themselves from others and wear masks as preferred. This area will be located in the section of seating and grass in front of the Sound Booth. UP&DT 2021 recognizes the difficulty in enforcing a masking policy throughout the festival grounds, but have chosen to limit the event capacity to 500 people, when the amphitheatre can usually hold over 4000+. We hope that this allows for maintaining reasonable distance in and around festival grounds.
HELP TENT: FIRST AID AND PEER SUPPORT
The HELP TENT is the location for Volunteer Services, Peer Support Services and First Aid Services, as necessary. The Party Mom’s will be educating volunteers, staff, and patrons regarding the use of Naloxone kits, safer sex, and safer use practices, as requested. Ear plugs will also be available here.
Basic first aid services will be available at the HELP TENT. We will be logging all incidences, events, and/or injuries, and delivered services using the INCIDENT LOG. Please report any of the following incidences to the HELP TENT and Party Moms:
Any report of misconduct or harassment.
Assistance of a patron, volunteer, or staff member experiencing heat exhaustion, moderate to severe intoxication, or any other first aid service.
Assistance to a family member reporting a lost child, or a lost child requiring assistance to find family members.
The “Chill Zone” will be a space for the Party Moms to monitor and assist any festival patrons requiring a quieter space and de-escalation, and/or intoxication, and/or heat exhaustion. Minor first aid services and support will be provided to these patrons, with advancement to Emergency Services and 911 at any time that patrons are deemed unsafe to themselves or others, medically unstable, or severely intoxicated.
VOLUNTEER EXPECTATIONS, ROLES, AND PERKS
Expectations
Thank you for your willingness to volunteer for Purple City 2021! Your volunteer shift will be an “Early Shift” from 12:00PM-5:00PM or a “Late Shift” from 5:00PM-11:00PM. Please arrive at the festival site at least 15 minutes prior to the start of your shift and report to the HELP TENT. Here you will Check-In and receive your Volunteer Badge, complete a Volunteer Consent, and complete a Verbal Health Declaration prior to the start of your shift. Please inform the Volunteer Coordinator (Andrea) ASAP if you are feeling unwell leading up to the festival day.
You are able to take a 30 minute break during your shift to eat a snack and rest, as needed. Please let your zone buddy know when you are going on break so that they can temporarily adjust/expand their roles accordingly. Please be flexible to accommodate other volunteer breaks and please reach out to the Party Moms at the HELP TENT if you need assistance with role coverage while you are on break.
Roles
Bar Service: You will be taking drink tickets in exchange for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages at the Drink Tent. In accordance with ProServe training, you will monitor patrons for signs of intoxication and over-service of alcoholic beverages. Please alert the Bar Manager (Matt Foster) in the event of severe intoxication and cutting-off of patrons.
Bar Assist: You will be responsible for maintaining stocked beer vats, stocked non-alcoholic drink vats, maintaining ice supply in vats, and alerting the Bar Manager (Matt Foster) of the need for cocktail replenishment. You will not be responsible for serving alcoholic beverages.
Roam: You will be given a zone of the festival site to roam and support the party! We ask that you familiarize yourself with the site map because you will act as a guide to festival go-ers seeking assistance. We also ask that you familiarize yourself with our Safer Spaces policies to act as an Ambassador for a comfortable and enjoyable festival experience for everyone. Lastly, we ask that you assess festival-goers for any unusual or concerning situations. If you notice any patrons who are overly intoxicated, disoriented, sitting by themselves, visibly unwell, or in an unsafe situation, please check-in with them using a “Thumbs-Up” approach. If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe doing so, please reach out to a Party Mom and/or Security Services to assist festival go-ers requiring help.
Monitor Smoking Areas: You will be stationed near the entrance of the tobacco smoking zone. Please note that alcoholic drinks are not permitted in the smoking zones. Per AGLC guideline 90.28(c)(v): No person may smoke or vape cannabis in an outdoor theatre. Please seek help from a Party Mom and/or Security Services with any issues imposing these rules.
Sell Drink Tickets: You will be trained to use tap technology to sell alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink tickets to festival patrons at the Drink Ticket Tent. There will also be some Purple City merch available for purchase that you’ll be in charge of.
General Maintenance: You will monitor garbage cans throughout the festival grounds and change garbage bags out as necessary. You will move full garbage bags to the large garbage bins at the West Entrance Gates. You will also be responsible for monitoring and collecting general trash and waste throughout the festival grounds. You’ll be paired with someone doing Gate Watch to get some variety in your role.
Gate Watch: You will be in charge of an area to guard - there is an exit only gate, the stairs up to the stage and the area to the green room. You’ll be paired with someone doing General Maintenance to switch off to get some variety in your role.
Tear Down: Even if not specifically assigned as such, we would greatly appreciate any help at the end of the night to pack things up to get off-site as quickly as possible. If you’re able to stay and help for any amount of time, please do so.
Perks
You are welcome to attend Purple City outside of your shift time for free! You will receive 2 drink tickets for use before or after your volunteer shift. Please do not redeem your drink ticket or consume alcohol during your shift. We’d ask that your volunteer badge comes off when your drink tickets are in use and when your volunteer shift is over. You can use your unused drink tickets at the Black Lodge for the volunteer party on Sunday.
SAFER SPACES POLICY 2021
Up + Downtown Music Festival is committed to providing a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all festival goers, artists, volunteers and venue staff. Everyone has the right to a harassment-free experience regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, ability, physical appearance, age, race, religion, or place of origin. We do not tolerate harassment in any form.
As we believe everyone has the right to feel safe, we have worked to create a policy to foster safer spaces at festival events. This policy is available on our website (www.updt.ca), and in our programs. We believe everyone has a valuable role to play in the creation of safer spaces, and as such, relevant information related to our policy, such as Bystander Intervention tips, will be posted in all venue washrooms.
General Conduct
Up + Downtown does not tolerate abusive or discriminatory behaviour from attendees, artists, volunteers or Board of Directors. Such behaviour is reason for potential removal from an Up + Downtown venue and could result in the cancellation of passholder privileges, a permanent festival ban, artist cancellation or cancellation of volunteer privileges.
Up + Downtown Board Members and venue staff have the authority to remove offenders from festival venues. Any decision to act on a permanent festival ban is at the discretion of the Up + Downtown Board of Directors. We believe survivors, who remain our main consideration in making decisions related to cancellation of passholder privileges, permanent bans or cancelling volunteer shifts. Bans and passholder cancellations will all be made on a case-by-case basis.
Resources to provide guidance and education are available to attendees or volunteers who have had their pass privileges revoked or have incurred a permanent ban. Survivor safety is our priority.
If you witness abusive or discriminatory behaviour at Up + Downtown, please find our trained Volunteer Manager (Andrea) or Peer Support Worker (Brittany), who will be wearing Party Mom vests and can be found at the HELP TENT. Our Volunteer Manager has taken a mandatory Bystander Intervention Training provided by the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton and are equipped to assist you.
Artist Conduct
Artists with a history of abusive or discriminatory behaviour, or any sort of behaviour that is deemed harmful to the creation of Safer Spaces at Up + Downtown are not welcome at the festival. Programming decisions are made with this in mind using the fullest extent of our knowledge.
If you witness abusive or discriminatory behaviour at Up + Downtown, please speak with our trained Volunteer Manager (Andrea), or one of the volunteers at the HELP TENT. Our Volunteer Manager and many of our board and volunteers have taken the Bystander Intervention Training provided by the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton and are equipped to assist you.
Offensive Attire
Offensive attire, including (but not limited to) hate symbols, or culturally appropriative attire, is not welcome at Up + Downtown Music Festival. Such attire may be grounds for removal from a festival venue as well as cancellation of passholder privileges or a permanent ban from the festival.
Any decisions to cancel a festival pass or invoke a permanent ban will be made on a case-by-case basis by the Up + Downtown Board of Directors.
Community Bystander Intervention Training
Up + Downtown’s Board Members and Volunteer Manager have undergone Bystander Intervention Training provided by the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton. This training provides the skills needed to recognize when and how to help when witnessing power-based violence.
Accessibility Information
Up + Downtown will continue to review its practices and any that do not respect and promote the dignity and independence of people with disabilities will be modified or removed. We are committed to seeking input from people with disabilities in order to ensure Up + Downtown meets the needs of people with disabilities.
Washrooms
Wherever possible, Up + Downtown will choose venues or adapt venues to have gender neutral washrooms. At the Heritage Amphitheatre, we have added signage indicating which bathroom has urinals. Use whichever bathroom you feel comfortable in and respect others’ right to do the same.
